In her own words Joy Downer tells us about her new video “Ships,” a short and (bitter) sweet ballad of a love that never was.
The song has such a vulnerability to it, so I really wanted to create a video that captured that feeling visually.
For me, being naked and exposed is the most vulnerable.
The director of the video, Tanner Gordon, was incredible to work with on this concept. His eye and attention to detail for every shot was so moving. The way he played with lighting to create so much with so little. It was such a delicate balance to make a piece that added to the song and didn’t take away from it. Something that felt pure and powerful while at the same time raw and vulnerable. He and Garrett Hoffman, the director of photography, really executed that balance. Which was also shot just last week. Produced by the wonderful Jess Harris.
With delicate piano, sterile robotic harmonies, and blurred out nipples to give an android like appearance, I’m faced with taking something that scares me and turning it into something beautifully raw, pure, and powerful in its transparency.
A valentines gift of closure and self love, so to speak.
