Joy Downer comes back with her single for “Patterns” featuring piano from Mike Garson (David Bowie). Directed by Tanner James Gordon whose commentary on the project: “Our first kiss is an intimate moment, a moment in which we connect on an emotional level, a moment of sexual desire and passion, and a sign of love. We expose our desires and open ourselves up to another person, making ourselves vulnerable. A kiss is a way of abandoning oneself, a joining of two people. But in this painting by René Magritte, he takes the cinematic cliché and disrupts our voyeuristic pleasure by covering the faces in cloth. What should be a moment of connection transforms into one of isolation and sexual frustration. An intimate moment becomes something dark and unsettling, hidden and anonymous.”
The context behind this painting coincided with the lyrical analysis of Joy Downer’s song ‘Patterns! Therefore, this iconic imagery became a significant source of inspiration in our work. We aimed to create a dissociation from the meaning of ‘The Lovers Il’ and breathe new life into the moments preceding that initial kiss. One lover feels frustrated and ultimately becomes fed up with their tireless efforts, eventually abandoning all hope and moving on.
