Different Leaf, a platform dedicated to the world of cannabis, recently announced its comeback with a new and expanded focus on art, culture, fashion, and music with the release of an original commission by Los Angeles artist Devin Troy Strother, whose new exhibition at Good Mother Gallery Annex in collaboration with The Pit is on view through March 14th.
Led by founder and publisher Michael Kusek, Different Leaf will release biannual projects each curated by a guest editor chosen by the magazine’s newly appointed curators: Denise Markonish, Chief Curator of Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA), and Ryan Schreiber, Pitchfork founder and former Editor-in-Chief.

“Different Leaf has never been just about cannabis. It’s about the world that grows around it. This is our way of telling that story, and we’re just getting started,” said Michael Kusek, Founder & Publisher of Different Leaf.
The new Different Leaf will be released in three formats: softcover, hardcover, and a premium edition. The premium edition, only available in limited quantities, is signed, numbered, and presented with artist-designed smoking accessories designed by the guest editor. Different Leaf will also produce special events, public programming, and products.
Alongside news of its return, Different Leaf launches its redesigned website, which features a new digital commission by Strother, reflecting the platform’s commitment to spotlighting artists and creatives. Strother is an established artist known for his colorful paintings that meld art history and pop culture references from film, editorial, music, and basketball as well as for his artist books and zine, which he produces as Colored Publishing.

The artist’s works are in the permanent collections of LACMA, the Studio Museum, The California African American Museum, and private collections worldwide.
Strother’s latest exhibition, The Los Angeles Confidential, a reference to the iconic film, features a newsstand at its center, creating a physical space for the community to gather within the confines of a white cube gallery.

These two separate, independent projects, Strother’s Different Leaf commission and his gallery exhibition, both celebrate the power of printed matter to create space for creative risktaking and community building.
