Concurrent with LA’s Art week, artist Job Piston presents his latest photo work staged within Villa Madrid on February 26, 2024. The show focuses on landscapes, architectural structures and intimate relationships as explored in the nature of their impermanence. Creating a dialog between what is spatially familiar and how it is renewed in its presentations in sometimes unexpected ways. Inspired by estate sales, and perhaps the Tik Tok obsessions with extreme estate shopping. The discreet gallery matched with the pleasures of domesticity aid in integrating images into the decor and cultivating a reflection of the contemporary salons.
The photos presented showcase expired film and post production works preposed as an antithesis to the monotony of social media aesthetics. X-ray exposure and film manipulations combined with different hours of the days frame the temperance of the images. Portraying forbidden architecture, private beaches or intimate pauses between two friends are at the center of the meeting of access and technique. The imposing might of the pink brutalism in Mallorca and the sensual doldrum of bed strewn bodies engage in a conversation of strength and fragility from textures to materials.
Job Piston is an artist and curator born in Royal Oak, Michigan, and now lives and works in New York and Los Angeles. His work often addresses gender and identity through conceptual photography and the history of portrait painting. This is the second project produced at Villa Madrid, the artist’s home and serves as the installation site.
