For the last 10 years Ashton Michael has made it through to a generation of angsty kids. His designs graced the top tier cast of pop punk purveyors from Machine Gun Kelly to Avril Lavigne, who was on hand along with Mod Sun, and Korn’s Johnathan Davis to see his latest collection and celebrate on a blocked off Hollywood and Las Palmas. Michael chose November 11 (11/11) at sunset as a witchy time to present a best of selection of hard partying wear in the true blue palette of black, gold, and silver.
Perfectly distressed loose knitted hoodies of metallic yarn made for a good layering piece, peek-a-boo cut out leather of strategical placements were classic kink. The structured leather worn baggie were embellished with a sea of heavy duty spikes, piercings, and pins. Stand out pieces included the Mongolian fur mini skirt which plumed with deviant suggestions of late nights in sepia noir, but the most awed at pieces featured 3D printed foot long safety pins and plate sized bull ring piercings. The ultimate use of this technique were the oversized studs made into bra cups.
Michael embraced his heritage with a nod to the Japanese art form Kinstugi, fusing it with his punk background. The art form highlights imperfection and presents them in ways which find beauty in these flaws, a principle shown in the wabi sabi design element. Punk-Tsugi is a love letter to LA which not only molded him but broke him and pieced him back together.
